No man is an island entire of itself; every man
is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe
is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as
well as a manor of thy friends or of thine
own were; any man’s death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
Having been raised on a tropical island gave me the opportunity to frequently visit the beach. There is a certain pleasure derived from contemplating the ocean’s tide and seeing what surprising new element washes on shore each time. The musings with ebb and flow elicit my perception to even the most simple of things. It is an influential factor and why I gravitate towards writing about what life brings my way moment by moment.
Today, I met a young man at a restaurant in the most peculiar way. This restaurant was overcrowded and the wait was rather lengthy. My husband and I had landed a rectangular high-top table suitable for four people. Since this young man was alone, he approached us and asked if it would be all right if he sat at the end of our table for the duration of his meal. We were happy to share and welcomed him to the space. We independently placed our orders and kept some separation for a short while. When his order arrived my husband commented on the appetizing appearance of the dish, creating a conversational icebreaker. It turns out we had various interests in common and before we knew it we were exchanging contact information.
On a similar note, I met a lively couple the previous weekend. An online sales site was advertising a slightly used Apple computer at a bargain price. With cash on hand, I arrived at this couple’s home and was greeted with a smile. After some small talk we discovered a common thread; the computer’s prior owner was also a writer. One thing lead to the next and, soon after, we all reconnected for a second visit.
There are no coincidences in life. I believe in serendipity, a force beyond our power that pivots around our desires and intentions. An unquestionable energy laces us together in the delicate web of life converging us in our humanness. However subtle or transient, those human encounters implode in a peaceful joy. If we then gather the effervescence raised from this joy, we find ourselves lifted in a kind of thought buoyancy. When we harness that buoyancy, we find that life drifts us through a passage of time, an effortless travel washing us ashore into another experience… another island. This natural play and display in the wave of potentiality creates entropy (from the Greek entrope, meaning change) Entropy promotes the unmasking of universal beauty leading us into self-evolution and expanded consciousness.
As we progress into the chaos and self imposed stresses brought on by the upcoming holiday festivities, I encourage you to ask yourself, “What has washed up on my shoreline today?” If your answer is, “nothing”, then I suggest you look again. Look not with your eyes, but with your heart. Seek the essence that will demystify why you are a pearl amidst a sea of islands making up this deep and enchanting ocean we call the human race.
